My name is Nelleke, I am 27 years old and I live in Weesp, the Netherlands. I work at the NIOO-KNAW in the department of Animal Ecology. I am in my first year as a PhD candidate, studying the effects of disturbance on barnacle geese, and the consequences this has for agricultural damage. I am looking at how disturbance influences the landscape of fear of Barnacle geese, and how it affects their energy budget and their choice of foraging location. As geese spend extra time flying, they lose foraging time, both of which has a negative effect on their energy budget, which will have to be compensated. Furthermore, choice of foraging location is not influenced only by disturbance or fear, but also by the quality of the available food and the need to forage. The location where geese forage and the time they spend foraging both have consequences for the agricultural damage that farmers experience.
